USC Fit Families is a free fitness and nutrition program for local underserved children, ages 7 to 17, who are at risk for diabetes, hypertension and other conditions associated with physical inactivity.
The ongoing program is focused on culturally relevant personalized and structured nutritional, exercise and physical activity-related education for children and their families to enhance potential for long-term lifestyle change.
Every Saturday, physical therapists, DPT students and volunteers meet families for a three-hour program.
The first two hours are devoted to fun physical activity that encourage children and their families to stay active and work toward their goals.
The last hour is spent with a bilingual health educator who helps participants incorporate healthier foods into their diets, learn how to read food labels and create healthier habits.
Fit Families has been funded by the USC Good Neighbors Campaign for the past 13 consecutive years.
