Lindsay Gately DPT ’19
Assistant Athletic Trainer/Physical Therapist
Washington Commanders

Late last year, USC alumna Lindsay Gately made her-story, becoming the first female member of the athletic training staff for the Washington Commanders. We caught up with the trailblazing Trojan for a micro Q-and-A about her experience, landing what many would consider a dream job.

First things first, what does it mean to you to be the first female member of the team’s athletic training staff?

It is an amazing honor! I worked with one of the first female ATs in the league (Sonia Ruef) in Pittsburgh during my internship with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It is great to see how far the league has come.

What does it take to be successful in this job?

Staying humble and motivated to keep improving yourself. Creating and maintaining great relationships with our athletes, physicians and other staff members in the building.

What’s a typical day like?

During the season, we’ll start with early morning treatments and rehab. Before practice, we will guide specific warm-ups and rehab programs and then tape/brace athletes appropriately. After practice coverage, we will assess injuries and determine the best plan of care for the athlete.

In what ways did your studies at USC prepare you for this job?

USC undoubtedly helped enhance my critical thinking skills and surrounded me with a large number of extremely intelligent and motivated people. Staying humble is an important part of this job.

What advice would you give to current students who are interested in a similar career trajectory?

Get involved in the field you envision yourself in — even if it is at a different level than your eventual goal. It will let you get hands-on experience, meet great people and make sure you understand the expectations of the field before diving in.
