Sports Residency Program

  • The Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program at USC is for the practicing physical therapist looking to enhance their clinical, on-field, and professional skills in sports physical therapy.

The mission of the Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program at the University of Southern California Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy is to graduate advanced practitioners of sports physical therapy who will express their education through excellence in the practice of clinical skills, both in the clinic and on the athletic field, who will continue to expand the body of knowledge in sports medicine by conducting and publishing clinical research, and who will make a lasting contribution to their local and professional community.

Residency graduates will demonstrate advanced skill in assessment, evaluation, and treatment in both the clinical setting and on-field management of athletic injuries. The program will lead to competence in primary care issues that relate to athletes throughout the lifespan.

Residency program goals will be achieved through a combination of formal and informal educational methods including, but not limited to:

    • Direct patient care at one of our affiliated clinics
    • Mentored clinical practice. Clinical mentors include USC sports and orthopedic physical therapy faculty.
    • Mentoring with USC sports-medicine physicians via care provision in specialty clinics of the Orthopedic Surgery department at USC.
    • Coursework within the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy Continuing Education Department.
    • Case report or scholarly paper submitted for publication.
