Experiences

  • During the course of the three-year curriculum, each student will participate in three different types of clinical experiences lasting 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and 16 weeks. The clinical experiences are as follows:

    • General Medicine and Orthopedic Practicum (PT 600A) - This 2-week practicum occurs in the middle of semester II in the first-year. The content focus is primarily on management of the patient with general medical and orthopedic involvement.
    • Summer I Affiliation (PT 600B) - This 6-week affiliation occurs in the summer after the first academic year, including a 5 week academic summer session. Dependent on the patient census, emphasis will be on management of patients with general medical and orthopedic dysfunction in an inpatient, outpatient, or combined setting.
    • Complex Patient Practicum (PT 600C) - This 2-week practicum occurs in the middle of semester I in the second year, and the focus will be on management of the patient with multiple medical diagnoses.
    • Neurological, Rehabilitation, Peds or Acute Practicum (PT 600D) - This 2-week practicum occurs in the middle of semester II in the second-year. The content focus is primarily on management of the patient with neurologic involvement or movement dysfunction amenable to facilitation.
    • Summer II Affiliation (PT 600e) - This 6-week affiliation occurs during the summer of the second-year before your 5-week academic summer session. Dependent upon patient census, emphasis will be placed on management of patients across the lifespan with neurologic, cardiovascular or pulmonary dysfunction in a rehabilitation, outpatient, or acute setting.
    • Third-Year Part-Time Clerkship (PT 630, PT 631, PT 632, PT 660) - This 16-week clerkship will consist of a minimum of 24 hours per week in a part-time setting. Depending on the facility chosen, the emphasis may be on care of the patient with orthopedic, neurologic, cardiovascular, or pulmonary in an adult or pediatric setting. (During the Part-Time Clerkship students will also be participating in integrative academic coursework.)
    • Third-year Full-Time Clerkship (PT 665) - This 16-week clerkship will consist of a minimum of 36 hours per week in a full-time setting. Depending on the facility chosen, the emphasis may be on care of the patient with orthopedic, neurologic, cardiovascular, or pulmonary in an adult or pediatric setting.

Please note that one-half of the class will complete a Part-Time Clerkship while the other half completes a Full-Time Clerkship each semester.
