“Biokinesiology integrates the study of movement at the molecular, cellular, organ and systems level, giving students a unique, interdisciplinary perspective of the biological basis of normal and disordered movement.”

What is Biokinesiology?
Simply put, biokinesiology is the study of human movement throughout the lifespan. Drawing upon the study of kinesiology and movement sciences, biokinesiology works to understand movement toward rehabilitating individuals with disorders that affect movement through physical therapy.
The interdisciplinary nature of biokinesiology combines the science of:
- Biomechanics
- Exercise Science
- Motor Behavior and Motor Control
- Motor Development
Biokinesiology is also characterized by three fundamental principles:
- Human health and quality of life depend on the ability to move skillfully and efficiently.
- Understanding how specific biological mechanisms control movement is essential for developing better methods for treating disorders that affect movement.
- Working from the realization that humans use movement to accomplish meaningful goals, emphasis is placed upon acknowledging the role of behavior in treatment.
