Clinical Research

  • A clinical trial is a research study involving human volunteers and is designed to answer specific health-related questions. Through clinical trials, or clinical research, investigators are able to find new and improved medicines or treatments for people. Interventional trials determine whether experimental treatments or new ways of using known therapies are safe and effective under controlled environments. Observational trials address health issues in large groups of people or populations in natural settings.

The NIH definition of a clinical trial which has been adopted by USC's Institutional Review Board is the following: a research study in which one or more human subjects are prospectively assigned to one or more interventions (which may include placebo or other control) to evaluate the effects of those interventions on health-related biomedical or behavioral outcomes.
