Jacquelin Perry Research Day 2015 a Success

Research was in full focus at the USC Health Sciences Campus on April 16, as the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy—alongside the USC Institute of Integrative Health—held its third annual Jacquelin Perry Research Day.

The event, named after the former faculty member and groundbreaking researcher Dr. Jacquelin Perry drew hundreds of faculty, staff and students to the Broad Lawn on the Health Sciences Campus where research posters were displayed—54 in all.

Division faculty and professionals from Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center served as judges for the day, which awards one research submission the Jacquelin Perry Research Day Award.

While many of the researchers—students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, faculty and staff members from the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy—might like to list a Jacquelin Perry Research Day win on their resumés, many discovered just how gratifying research is on its own.

“I learned from doing this that I really have a passion for research,” said Andrew Hooyman, a PhD student in Biokinesiology. “It’s a humbling experience, but it teaches you to always have a healthy sense of skepticism.”

Another Biokinesiology PhD student Kristamarie Pratt, who walked away with the day’s top prize, thought the experience would prepare her for life beyond her degree.

“Presenting [here] is an opportunity to practice and improve skills that will be utilized not only at scientific conferences worldwide, but also in applying for jobs and discussing future opportunities with collaborators,” Pratt said.

The day opened with a luncheon followed by the viewing of the posters by attendees and panel of judges. After deliberation among the judges, the award ceremony followed, naming Pratt the winner of the Jacquelin Perry Research Day Award for her research on the deficits of the knee post-reconstructive surgery of the anterior cruciate ligament.

Jacquelin Perry Research Day follows USC Research Day 2015, which took place on March 25, 2015.
