Teaching Awards

  • Outstanding Teacher Award (Full-Time) †
    Purpose: To acknowledge and honor a full-time faculty member who demonstrates high intellectual standards, extremely effective teaching strategies, and genuine concern for students.

    Eligibility/Criteria - The individual must:

    1. A full-time faculty member in the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy who has not received this award in the past 3 years.

    2. Demonstrates high intellectual standards in terms of content, rigor, and integration of the best scholarship in courses taught.

    3. Demonstrates concern for the subject taught and continually incorporates new knowledge and innovative teaching methods into their course.

    4. Uses extremely effective teaching strategies to enhance student learning.

    5. Communicates effectively and demonstrates unusual effort to provide a rich learning environment.

    6. Demonstrates a unique or extraordinary contribution to excellence in teaching.

    7. Demonstrates genuine concern for students.

    Procedure for Nomination:

    1. Class representatives will solicit nominations from each year’s class by March 15th. The chair in consultation with the Awards Committee will provide a list of candidates.

    2. The Chair of the Division in consultation with the Awards Committee will determine the winner of the award based on the nominations submitted by the students. The Chair will use a weighted system in order that the proportion of votes will increase in weight for the third year class compared to the first year class.

    3. The Chair will determine the current year’s recipient by April 1.

    4. The graduating class will be notified in order to prepare for faculty presentation at the Commencement Awards Ceremony


    Outstanding Teacher Award (Adjunct Faculty) †
    Purpose: To acknowledge and honor an adjunct faculty member who demonstrates high intellectual standards, extremely effective teaching strategies, and genuine concern for students.

    Eligibility/Criteria - The individual must:

    1. An adjunct faculty member in the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy who has not received this award in the past 3 years.

    Clinical Educator of the Year Award (Clinical Faculty) †

    Purpose: To recognize an outstanding clinical educator who has provided exceptional teaching, service, and support to our students.

    Eligibility/Criteria - The individual must:

    1. A clinical educator who has served as a clinical instructor to USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy students for at least 3 years.

    2. Demonstrates high intellectual standards in terms of content, rigor, and integration of the best scholarship in courses taught.

    3. Demonstrates enthusiastic support for the program and the role of clinical education in the development of exemplary physical therapists.

    Procedure for Nomination:

    1. The Division’s Director of Clinical Education will nominate potential recipients by March 15.

    2. Nominated candidates will be presented to the full faculty for selection at the last faculty meeting in March.

    Outstanding Mentorship (Teaching Assistant) †
    Purpose: To acknowledge and honor a student in the Ph.D., PP-DPT, or Residency Program who demonstrates exceptional skill in assisting DPT students to master difficult curricular content, participate in professional activities, and achieve the personal growth essential to the successful practice of physical therapy.

    Eligibility/Criteria - The individual must:

    1. A Teaching Assistant in the entry-level DPT program.

    2. Demonstrates exceptional skill as a teaching assistant through teaching modules or lab activities that are clear, well organized, and effective.

    3. Recipient has exceptional TA evaluations from the DPT students

    4. Demonstrates the development of knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject matter that the individual has taught.

    5. Communicates effectively with students and professors and contributes to an enriched learning environment.

    6. Serves as a professional role model for our DPT students.

    Procedure for Nomination:

    1. Division faculty who has Teaching Assistants assigned to their courses will nominate potential recipients by March 15.

    2. Nominated candidates will be presented to the full faculty for selection at the last faculty meeting in March.

    3. The Awards committee will review TA evaluations and make recommendations.

    4. Nominated candidates will be presented to the full faculty for selection at the last faculty meeting in March.
