After an arduous campaigning process, Sean Johnson and Scott McCauley were elected to office. Johnson was elected Vice President of the APTA Student Assembly Board of Directors and McCauley was elected Nominating Committee Chairman.

Optimal Living with MS
The USC Divisions of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and the Department of Neurology, were awarded the “Sylvia Lawry Founders Award” by the Southern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society during the Chapter’s Annual Meeting in October. The award was given in recognition of a novel collaborative program ‘Optimal Living with MS,’ developed and implemented in a partnership among the three USC units. The focus of ‘Optimal Living with MS’ is to provide a client-centered, community-based program designed to enhance quality of life in individuals with MS residing in the greater Los Angeles area. The award “is given only in recognition of truly outstanding innovation to benefit people with MS”, wrote Chapter President Leon LeBuffe in a letter informing the Division of the award.

Resnik Elected President of the California Physical Therapy Association
Cheryl Resnik, DPT, Assistant Professor of Clinical Physical Therapy was recently elected President of the California Physical Therapy Association (CPTA) for the term Jan 2007- December 2008. Dr. Resnik brings many qualifications to the position owing to her considerable range of experiences in rehabilitation, hospital administration, and teaching over the past decade in service to USC, CPTA, and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Though she asserts that being President of the CPTA was never in her career plan, the passion she brings to discussions on professional issues makes her a natural for leading California physical therapists through the political landscape.

Bradley Receives Award to Study Fetal Movement and its Effects on Postnatal Motor Behavior
Dr. Nina Bradley, Associate Professor of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy, received a research grant from the NIH-National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study the development and control of repetitive leg movements during embryonic development. The grant is a three-year award for $405,870.

Mulroy Awarded NIH Grant to Study Shoulder Pain in People with Spinal Cord Injury
Individuals who sustain a spinal cord injury and are then reliant on a wheelchair for mobility are at increased risk for development of disabling shoulder joint pain. Sara Mulroy, PhD, PT, director of the Pathokinesiology Laboratory at Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy, has been awarded a 5-year, $1.04 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Medical Rehabilitation Research (NCMRR) to study the risk factors for shoulder pain in this population.

EXCITEing Results Published in JAMA
In the lead article of its November 1 issue, the Journal of the American Medical Association published the results of a study on the effects of constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT) on stroke patients. Carolee Winstein, Professor of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and director of the division’s Motor Behavior and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory, is the second author on the article.

Mary E. Bennett, PT, Passes Away

Mary E. Bennett, PT
July 30, 1923 - October 9, 2006

Mary Bennett lost her battle with cancer on October 9, 2006 at her home in Milwaukie, Oregon. She was born July 30, 1922 in Forest Grove. She received her B.A. degree from Willamette University in 1945 and taught physical education in LaGrande, Oregon for five years. She moved to California to attend the University of Southern California (USC) on a National Polio Foundation scholarship. In 1951, she received her Certificate in Physical Therapy from USC, and then worked for the next two years at Los Angeles County General Hospital before returning to USC as a PT instructor. In 1959, she received her M.A. degree from USC. She served as President of the Southern California Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) from 1961 to1962. In addition to other service at the local and state level, she served on the APTA Board of Directors as Secretary from 1964 to 1967. In 1967, she moved to California State University at Northridge to become Director of Physical Therapy and to develop the program. In 1974 she was appointed by then Governor Reagan to the California Physical Therapy Licensing Board. In 1982, she received the Lucy Blair Service Award from the APTA. She was awarded the APTA Section for Education Distinguished Educator Award in 1984. She retired from Cal. State Northridge as Professor Emeritus in 1987.

Research by Dr. Pollard indicates that training can help cut risk of knee injury in female soccer players
Research by Christine Pollard and colleagues in the USC Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy was featured in an article that appeared in Reuters about how training can help cut female soccer players' knee injury risk. Female athletes are four to eight times more likely than male ones to injure the anterior cruciate ligament. Pollard's study tested the effects of teaching female soccer players special exercises so that they jumped and landed more like boys. By the end of the season, the players were able to land with their hips in a position that was less likely to torque the knees.

OT and PT Departments Align with the School of Dentistry
University officials have announced that the Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy and the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy – each ranked #1 in the nation according to US News & World Report – have become aligned with the USC School of Dentistry effective July 1. The move is intended to create new interdisciplinary synergies as recently encouraged by the prestigious Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Department Board Members Elected to Fill APTA Offices

Salem Receives Interdisciplinary Grant from Zumberge Fund
George Salem, PhD, Associate Professor of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy is the recipient of an interdisciplinary grant from the James H. Zumberge Research Innovation Fund.  The $50,000 award is for the study entitled: The Influence of Fixed and Changing Environmental Stimuli on Walking and Freezing Behavior in Persons with Parkinson's Disease.  Co-investigators include Giselle Petzinger, MD of the Department of Neurology at the USC Keck School of Medicine and Allan Wu, MD of the UCLA Department of Neurology. The project manager for the study is Biokinesiology student JooEun Song.

Biokinesiology student receives award from the International Society of Biomechanics
Shruti Arya, BPT has been awarded a matching dissertation award of $2,000 by the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), to fund her grant entitled “In vivo evaluation of tendon mechanical properties in the presence of tendinosis”. Her award will be officially announced at the 2007 ISB conference, which will be held in Taiwan. As part of the award, Ms. Arya will be expected to give an oral or poster presentation of her work at a future ISB conference.

George Salem quoted on how athletes are reaching the limits of human performance
THE LEDGER: George J. Salem, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy was quoted in an article about how athletes are reaching the limits of human performance. In sports where the contenders must power their own body weight, broken records generally are few and far between, the story noted. "And the records will be beat by one-thousandth of a second rather than a second," said Salem. "Improvements are going to be hard to come by." Kimi Yamada Awarded Outstanding DPT - Orthopaedic section
The Department Awards Committee is extremely pleased to announce the selection by the Orthopaedic Section of Kimi Yamada as this year’s “Outstanding PT Student.” The award will be presented during the Orthopaedic Section business meeting at CSM in San Diego in February.

Grant Awarded to Craig Newsam, PT, DPT
Congratulations to Craig J Newsam, PT, DPT, research physical therapist, Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, who was awarded a 1-year, $40,000 research grant by the Foundation for Physical Therapy for his project "Strengthening Exercises to Reduce Shoulder Pain in Persons With Tetraplegia." Craig is also an adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Biokinesiology & Physical Therapy at USC.

White Coat Ceremony Speech By Keynote Speaker Marisa Perdomo, DPT
On September 1, 2005 the Department held is annual Departmental Convocation and White Coat ceremony to begin the academic year. Faculty, staff, alumni, students and their families gathered to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of second- and third-year DPT students who received scholarships and honors, and to initiate the first-year students into the profession of physical therapy by presenting them with a white coat.

Task Practice Schedules Aim to Enhance Recovery after Stroke
Nicolas Schweighofer, principal investigator, and Carolee Winstein, co-principal investigator, have received a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study the effects of task practice schedules for functional motor skill re-acquisition on participants who are recovering from stroke-hemiparesis. The grant is a 2 year award for $162,750.

Playground Pals Receives Grant from the USC Neighborhood Outreach Program
In the spring of 2005, the USC Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy partnered with LA’s Best, an after school education, enrichment and recreation program; and Griffin, Murchison and Sheridan elementary schools, located in the neighborhoods surrounding the Health Sciences Campus, to establish USC Playground Pals.

PhD Candidate Recognized by USC for Excellence in Teaching
Alberto F. Vallejo, Ph.D. Candidate in the Biokinesiology program is the recipient of an Award for Excellence in Teaching from USC. The awards for Excellence in Teaching recognize exceptional contributions by teaching assistants to the missions of both their Departments and the University.

Kulig receives grant from HRA
Dr. Kornelia Kulig has received a $10K seed grant from the Health Research Association to study lumbar paraspinal atrophy and fatigability in persons with recurrent episodes of low back pain: relationship, mechanism and an association with clinical outcomes.

Winstein Promoted to Professor
The Department is pleased to announce that Dr. Carolee Winstein has been promoted to the rank of Professor of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. Dr. Winstein had been previously tenured as Associate Professor.

McMillan Scholarship awarded to USC PhD Student
Maureen Whitford, PT, MHS, a first year PhD student in the Biokinesiology program is one of six doctoral students across the nation to receive a McMillan Doctoral Scholarship, awarded by the Foundation for Physical Therapy Board of Trustees.

Sum Receives Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award from the APTA
Jonathan Sum, a third year student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program at the University of Southern California, has been awarded the Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award given by the American Physical Therapy Association. The award will be presented at the APTA’s 2005 Annual Combined Sections Meeting in New Orleans, February 23-27.

Fisher and Sullivan elected as officers in Neurology Section of APTA
Kathy Sullivan, PhD, PT and Beth Fisher, PhD, PT were elected as officers of the Executive Committee of the American Physical Therapy Association Neurology Section.

New Coordinator of Clinical Education Appointed
After Jo Ochoa announced her retirement as coordinator of clinical education, the Department began an intense search for her replacement. Effective July 1, 2004 the USC Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy has a new coordinator of clinical education—Ms. Nena Becerra.

Salem Receives Tenure
George J. Salem, PhD has been promoted to the rank of associate professor of biokinesiology and physical therapy with tenure.

Schweighofer Joins the Faculty
Nicolas Schweighofer, PhD, is joining the Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy as an assistant professor and will be teaching in the neuroscience curriculum. Dr. Schweighofer is an internationally recognized researcher in computational neuroscience who has developed neural models of brain structures involved in the adaptive control of movement.

USC DPT Student in the Olympics
Robin Beauregard, a first-year Doctor of Physical Therapy student, is a member of the U.S. Women’s Water Polo Team that competed at this year’s Olympics in Athens. She and her teammates won a bronze medal on Aug. 26 after a 6-5 win over the Australian team. Beauregard made one of the six U.S. goals.

USC Student Receives Outstanding PT Student Award from the APTA
John Popovich, now a graduate of the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, received the Outstanding Physical Therapy Student Award given by the American Physical Therapy Association at the 2004 Annual Combined Sections Meeting in Nashville, TN. The purpose of this award is to identify a student physical therapist with exceptional scholastic ability and potential for contribution to orthopaedic physical therapy. The criteria for eligibility is that students shall excel in academic performance in both the professional and pre-requisite phases of their educational program, and be involved in professional organizations and activities that provide the potential growth and contributions to the profession and orthopaedic physical therapy.

PhD Student Receives a PODS I Scholarship from the Foundation for Physical Therapy
Richard B. Souza, PT, MPT, and PhD student in biokinesiology, has been selected by the Foundation for Physical Therapy Board of Trustees to receive a $7,500 Promotion of Doctoral Studies scholarship in support of the post-candidacy phase of his doctoral studies. Souza was one of six students across the nation to receive the award. Our congratulations to Richard!

President of the APTA Addresses the Class of 2004
Ben F. Massey, Jr., president of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) served as the keynote speaker for the USC Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy Commencement Ceremony in May. The title of Mr. Massey’s talk was “The Future is Bright for Physical Therapy.”

Kulig Receives Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching from the APTA
Kornelia Kulig, PT, PhD has been selected as the 2004 recipient of the Dorothy E. Baethke Eleanor J. Carlin Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching. The award was established in 1981 to recognize excellence in academic teaching in physical therapy. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge an individual who has made significant contributions to physical therapy education though excellence in academic teaching as exemplified in the professional and teaching careers of Dorothy E. Baethke and Eleanor J. Carlin.

Second Annual FASIG Research Retreat Sponsored by the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA held at USC
The second research retreat sponsored by the Foot and Ankle Special Interest Group (FASIG) of the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA took place April 30-May 1, 2004 at the USC Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy. Forty- three participants enjoyed rich discussion centered around 13 platform presentations and two keynote addresses delivered by Arne Lundberg, MD and Neil Sharkey, PhD. The course participants offered a wide variety of backgrounds. Speakers and those in attendance included physicians, podiatrists, engineers, physical therapists and doctoral students. At the end of the second day, all course participants engaged in the development of a consensus statement that will be summarized in a future issue of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

PT Student Recognized as Outstanding Teaching Assistant by USC
Marisa Perdomo, a graduate teaching assistant in the department of biokinesiology and physical therapy, has always viewed physical therapists such as herself as teachers offering life-changing lessons for patients.

Schroeder Receives Grant from the Wright Foundation
E. Todd Schroeder, assistant professor of research has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Robert E. and May R. Wright Foundation for his research in the area of translational arthritis. His study, entitled "Enhancing Skeletal Muscle Protein Metabolism and Function," will test whether resistance training, a potent stimulus for protein synthesis, will enhance protein metabolism, muscle quality, and ultimately physical function and that these effects will be enhanced by restoring testosterone to physiologic levels.

Two PT Faculty Members Receive Grants from the USC Zumberge Fund
Established as the Faculty Research and Innovation Fund by former USC President James H. Zumberge to enhance scholarship at the university, the fund was renamed in Zumberge's honor in 1991. It is the only university research money given to USC faculty.
